Biography
From an early age, Stephen Hanson knew he wanted to pursue art as a career, inspired by masters of fantasy and realism such as Arthur Rackham, Brian Froud, Alan Lee, Chuck Close, and Frank Frazetta. He trained at Batley Art College, graduating with a distinction in graphic design and illustration, which provided a strong foundation in both traditional media and visual storytelling.
His professional journey began with a role at a greeting card company, where he honed his skills in illustration. Passionate about animation and special effects — particularly the stop-motion magic of Ray Harryhausen's films — Stephen Hanson sought opportunities in the film industry. After building his portfolio in his spare time, he joined Cosgrove Hall Productions in Manchester as a visual development artist, contributing to beloved projects including The BFG, Dangermouse, and Count Duckula.
Over the following decades, Stephen Hanson worked as a freelance visual development artist and illustrator on major animated films such as Balto, The Corpse Bride, Despicable Me, Flushed Away, Arthur Christmas, and Adventures with Pirates.
