Collection: Sean Durkin

Born in North Yorkshire in 1963, British artist Sean Durkin has become one of the UK's most distinctive contemporary painters, creating richly atmospheric scenes that combine humour, nostalgia and storytelling. His artwork is instantly recognisable for its expressive style, playful narratives and the charming cast of whimsical characters that often inhabit each composition.

Sean's journey into the art world began with an extraordinary childhood experience that would shape the course of his life. At the age of eight, he awoke one morning to discover an original L.S. Lowry painting resting on his family's mantelpiece. The artwork had been stolen the previous evening by his father, John Durkin, in what would become one of Britain's most unusual art thefts. Rather than seeking financial gain, the accompanying ransom note demanded improved gallery security, Sunday opening for working people to enjoy art, and, famously, that the local Mayor raffle his underpants for charity.

While the remarkable story captured national headlines, it was the painting itself that left the greatest impression on Sean. Fascinated by Lowry's distinctive "matchstick" figures and the evocative atmosphere of the scene, he found himself returning to the memory time and again. Years later, that unforgettable image inspired him to pick up a paintbrush and begin creating artwork of his own.

Today, Sean has developed a highly individual artistic style that pays subtle homage to Lowry while remaining unmistakably his own. His paintings are filled with warmth, wit and carefully observed narrative, inviting viewers to discover new details each time they look. Keen-eyed collectors may even spot recurring characters such as a policeman, a robber or the Mayor in his underpants - a light-hearted tribute to the remarkable story that first inspired his artistic journey.

Sean's work has attracted a loyal and rapidly growing collector base throughout the UK. His exhibitions have enjoyed outstanding success, including consecutive sell-out solo exhibitions, and his paintings continue to generate increasing demand among collectors seeking original, characterful contemporary British art.

Alongside his artistic success, Sean has appeared in numerous BBC television and radio programmes, featured widely in the national and regional press, and has generously supported local and national charities through the donation of his artwork, helping to raise thousands of pounds for good causes.

Today, Sean Durkin is celebrated for paintings that combine humour, nostalgia and exceptional storytelling. Rich in atmosphere and full of hidden details, his artwork encourages viewers to pause, smile and immerse themselves in the miniature worlds he creates, ensuring every painting reveals something new with each viewing.
