Biography

Jo Starkey is a professional British artist specialising in contemporary landscapes and florals, based in East Sussex. Originally from a rural village on the outskirts of Nottingham in the East Midlands, she grew up surrounded by countryside that fostered a lifelong love of nature. From a young age she showed artistic talent inherited from her father, but her first passion was dance. She trained intensively during her secondary school years at a stage school in Surrey, boarding and pursuing a potential career as a dancer.

At the age of sixteen she decided to hang up her ballet shoes and dedicate herself fully to art. After completing a BTEC art foundation course in Nottingham, she moved to London where she balanced artistic development with part-time secretarial work for about a decade. This period included extensive travel and the joys of motherhood. Her artistic journey fully blossomed after she relocated to Sussex in 2003–2004, where she established her studio and began building a successful career exhibiting and selling through galleries across the UK and internationally.

Now working from her light-filled studio at the Turner Dumbrell Workshops in Ditchling, Jo draws constant inspiration from the surrounding South Downs and rural landscapes. She works primarily from her own photographs, reinterpreting natural scenes with a contemporary, sometimes ethereal touch. Several years ago she recovered from a life-threatening illness, an experience that renewed her passion and brought greater emotional intensity and fervour to her painting.

Artistic Style & Technique

Jo Starkey’s artistic style blends abstract realism in landscapes with stylised contemporary florals, characterised by vibrant colour, dynamic composition and a sense of ethereal movement. She works primarily in acrylics and mixed media, often on silk mounted on board, building multiple layers to achieve remarkable depth and three-dimensional texture.

Metallic accents of gold and silver are threaded throughout her work, catching the light to create shimmer — particularly effective in meadow scenes with textured grasses. Colour guides many compositions, transforming natural scenes with a contemporary twist while retaining their enchanting essence. Jo Starkey artwork balances careful observation from her own reference photographs with expressive interpretation, resulting in paintings full of life, luminosity and emotional resonance that appeal to collectors seeking both beauty and sophistication.

Though my path as an artist took time to unfold, the dawn of the new millennium marked a turning point. After finishing my studies, I eagerly joined an art foundation course in Nottingham to tap into my creative potential. Alongside this, I pursued a secretarial course to keep my options versatile. The vibrant energy of London called to me, and for the next ten years, I juggled my artistic endeavors with part-time work in the city. This period was a whirlwind of exciting adventures, world travels, and the joyful experience of motherhood.

In 2003, I transitioned to Sussex, where I found my creative haven. With my own studio, I finally had the freedom to establish myself as an artist. As time went on, I thoughtfully built my profile, exhibiting and selling my work in galleries across the UK and around the globe.
