More about Jennifer Hogwood
The endearing images that she she is so well known for, communicate the essence of her subject with humour and charm. Her studio is a former milking parlour on a working farm in rural Dorset which is just down the road from her house. The setting is idyllic and is perfect for her creations. Just outside the door, it has beautiful views and fields that are full of cows and is incredibly peaceful. It is this sense of calm that gives her inspiration and makes it the ideal place for her to work. Watching the cows graze in the fields, chickens strutting around the yard and dogs ambling in and out is a constant source of inspiration to her.
Animals have always been a big part of Jennifer's life and she finds their presence comforting. She loves the fact that they have such individual personalities and an innocence about them. When she starts a new piece, she first spends time with a pencil sketching freehand, adding more and more detail until she feels the composition is perfect before she starts to paint. Working with quick-drying acrylics and luminescent enhancements, she admits her studio is anything but tidy! She uses both brushes and her fingers to create her work marrying expressionism and abstraction in contemporary form. She adores the contrast between natural and glamorous and happily works with diamond dust which she finds exquisite. Gold and silver leaf is another favourite of hers.
The celebration of the natural world is nothing new to Jennifer, but it’s a theme she wishes to do more with – her aim is to highlight the need for wildlife conservation in an increasingly tech-driven world. She loves to use her platform to pay respect to earth’s wild habitats and to champion causes which are close to her heart.
The collectable editions reflect all of this. They are beautifully hand embellished, with little jewels which add a sparkle into the eyes of the animal. She has even created her own unique shade of brown which she uses in every painting. Her skill is knowing exactly how it will react if she adds a touch of white or dark and this always makes the painting process flow with ease. Another interesting fact is that she begins each painting with the nose and gradually she works outwards, adding in the layers of detail until she reaches the final stages of white highlighting on the image.
She enjoys being able to connect with her collector. To make their hearts skip a beat when they see one of her paintings. This is driven in that she wants them to feel the emotion for example that she feels when she see a pod of dolphins.
One thing that Jennifer says she will never take for granted is that she still finds it an honour when someone wants to hang something that she has created on their wall. This will always give her joy beyond all else.
