She studied painting at the College of Charleston under Michael Phillips, whose “no rules” approach gave her the freedom to express herself without restriction from the age of eighteen. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Georgia and further refined her practice during a study-abroad period at the Lamar Dodd School of Art in Cortona, Italy.
