Biography
Gee Gee Collins was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, in a household steeped in creativity and style. Her mother, Joyce, was both a fine artist and the owner of a chain of women’s clothing boutiques, surrounding her from an early age with colour, fashion and textiles. This dual influence of art and design continues to shape her work today. A family tradition of inventive trading even saw her mother exchange clothes for her braces when she was eight years old — a story that later found a charming echo in her own career.
She studied painting at the College of Charleston under Michael Phillips, whose “no rules” approach gave her the freedom to express herself without restriction from the age of eighteen. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Georgia and further refined her practice during a study-abroad period at the Lamar Dodd School of Art in Cortona, Italy. Early influences included Joan Mitchell, Franz Kline, Matisse, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell and Cy Twombly.
After college she worked in healthcare while painting in her spare time for around seven years. Encouraged by a friend’s success and her mother’s return to art in retirement, she eventually committed fully to her practice and became a full-time artist in 2014. Based for many years in Minneapolis, she found the long winters surprisingly productive for studio work. Her pieces have been shown across the United States and she has been featured in the book *100 Artists of the Midwest*. Today her work is collected internationally and continues to evolve with the same spontaneous joy that first drew her to painting as a child.

Artistic Style & Influences
Gee Gee Collins’s artistic style is defined by refined spontaneity. She approaches the canvas with ease and a lack of inhibition, allowing ideas to develop organically into extravagant, layered designs. Intense black lines are pitched against a palette that ranges from soft neutrals and muted tones to almost fluorescent vibrancy. Paint is built up in richly textured layers that give each piece a sense of history while retaining an ethereal quality. Organic lines and a playful sense of whimsy create figures and forms that feel loose yet elegant, producing a fine balance between beauty and chaos, structure and freedom.
