Biography

Duncan Macgregor was born in Oxford in 1961 and grew up in the Midlands. Despite living far inland, he developed an early and enduring passion for the sea. This led to a highly significant eighteen-month sailing voyage across the Atlantic and then around the coast of Britain in a modest 34-foot yacht with his wife, during which they experienced long windless periods alongside the extremes of high winds and heavy seas.

Supported by family and friends, he turned professional in 2002. He now divides his time between the Midlands (including time in Staffordshire and Norfolk) and a studio on the Isle of Mull in Scotland during the summer months. On Mull his days often begin with a bracing dip in the cold sea or nearby pond before he settles to paint, and he maintains an active outdoor life of cycling, canoeing, climbing and windsurfing that feeds the energy in his work.

Inspiration comes primarily from direct experience of nature, light on water and the landscapes of both England and Scotland. He works interpretatively rather than literally, building richly textured acrylic surfaces that convey spontaneity and vitality. In addition to painting he has published a collector’s book, Making Waves, offering personal insight into his life and process, and continues to experiment with new presentation methods including works on glass.
