Biography
Born in Bristol in 1972, Doug Hyde showed early artistic talent, filling notebooks with joyful sketches. After school and college, he began creating Doug Hyde art for family and friends around 2002, soon turning professional. By 2005, BBC named him the UK’s most popular living artist, and he won Best-Selling Published Artist at the Fine Art Trade Guild Awards.
Doug Hyde artwork stands out through his finger-applied pastel technique on large canvases, blending hard edges with soft tones and vibrant colours. Evolving from acrylics and watercolours, he now favours pastels for their freedom. A Tate Modern visit to Mark Rothko’s works inspired his bold, simplified compositions.
His childlike figures, lovers, pets, and iconic smiles explore love, friendship, and joy. Inspiration comes from everyday moments, captured in an ‘ideas box’ of notes and sketches. Doug Hyde prints and sculptures extend these themes into collectable forms.
Five books, BBC and Channel 4 features, plus celebrity collectors like Rory McIlroy highlight his reach. A 2014 decade milestone and 2023 20-year celebration mark his success. Charitable works include £150,000 raised for the NHS in 2020. Daily family life fuels Doug Hyde art that continues uplifting viewers worldwide.
