Biography

Dave White was born in Liverpool in 1971. He studied Fine Art (Painting) at Liverpool John Moores University, graduating with a BA (Hons) in 1994. During his time there he painted in the former studio of John Lennon, an experience that left a lasting imprint on his creative outlook. Immediately after graduation he was selected for the prestigious Northern Graduates exhibition at the Royal College of Art in London, marking the start of a rapidly rising career.

Early recognition followed swiftly. In 1992 he was named Best Newcomer in Visual Arts by the Daily Post, and in 1997 he received the Best Young Artist award at the Animals in Art exhibition and auction at Sotheby’s, London, where his wildlife paintings were shown alongside works by David Hockney. He was also shortlisted for the NatWest Prize for Art and the Royal Overseas League award, and completed a painting residency at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.

In 2002 Dave White pioneered the “Sneaker Art” movement with large-scale oil paintings of iconic footwear. This innovative body of work led to long-term collaborations with Nike and Jordan Brand, making him one of only a handful of artists to receive his own signature Jordan releases. A later collaboration with Size? and Nike produced the celebrated AM95 DW trainers, inspired by fox and rabbit paintings from his Albion series. These projects appeared in major exhibitions including Phillips’ Tongue + Chic in New York, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Dave White now lives and works in Devon. Over more than two decades his practice has focused increasingly on expressive portraits of endangered and extinct species, using watercolour overlaid with oil, bold mark-making and occasional applications of gold leaf or diamond dust.
