Colin Banks art is defined by a distinctive technical process in which the artist works on aluminium panels, building layers of spray paint and airbrush before incising and engraving the surface to reveal the white base beneath. This intaglio-like method creates luminous highlights, rich texture and a sense of depth that brings each animal portrait to life. The result is every Colin Banks artwork feels both modern and intimately connected to its subject.
Specialising in big cats, particularly tigers, lions and leopards, Colin Banks prints and originals balance semi-abstract energy with highly realistic eyes that serve as the emotional focal point. His passion for wildlife and conservation infuses the work with authenticity, inviting viewers into a quiet narrative of presence, power and vulnerability.
Biography
Colin Banks was born in Cheltenham and raised in Bedfordshire. A natural talent for creativity led him to study 3D Design at university, after which he built a successful career as a Design Engineer. His heart remained with art, and in time he took the leap of leaving engineering to pursue painting full-time.
In 2007 he married Natalie, and together they have two children, Charlie and Poppy. A lifelong passion for big cats has shaped his subject matter; personal encounters watching and photographing these animals in their natural habitats give his work a sense of authenticity and emotional depth. Each piece is created in his studio in a peaceful Buckinghamshire village.
Working exclusively on aluminium panels, he combines spray paint and airbrush with a range of tools to engrave and incise the surface. His expressive use of bold, vibrant colour and semi-abstract approach has earned him recognition as a contemporary wildlife artist, with works held in collections across the globe and audiences captivated by his live exhibitions and demonstrations.

Colin Banks Artwork & Prints
Colin Banks artwork centres on powerful portraits of big cats, rendered with a semi-abstract energy that still honours the animal’s presence. Bold colour, layered texture and carefully observed eyes create a sense of closeness, while the underlying narrative suggests the animal’s own story of strength and uncertainty.
Limited-edition Colin Banks prints extend this distinctive vision, preserving the luminosity of the original aluminium works and the intensity of the gaze. Collectors are drawn to the combination of technical innovation and genuine passion for wildlife that characterises every piece.
Artistic Style & Technique
Colin Banks works on aluminium panels, beginning with a white base coat. He then applies black and silver airbrush and spray paint to establish abstract backgrounds and the darker forms of the animal. Once this foundation is complete, he uses a range of tools to engrave and incise the surface, exposing the white beneath and creating highlights and detail in a manner reminiscent of intaglio.
The eyes remain the constant focal point, rendered with exceptional realism to draw the viewer into a direct connection. Surrounding areas may shift toward semi-abstraction, allowing bold, vibrant colour and dynamic texture to convey energy and emotion. This balance of precise observation and expressive freedom is central to his approach.
Rooted in personal encounters with wildlife and a commitment to conservation, Colin Banks art offers a contemporary, intimate view of the animal kingdom that feels both immediate and enduring.
