Nigel Humphries

elf-taught artist Nigel Humphries is on a mission to make people smile. Through his nostalgic oil paintings of superheroes, toys and retro sweets, Nigel draws upon his own childhood to create award-winning artwork that aims to revolutionise the way people view still life painting. With influences ranging from comic books to films and British confectionery, Nigel’s unique approach stems from years spent devouring the art of others in order to form a style that, in his own words, is: “traditional, but with a quirky element”. As a youth in Stoke-on-Trent, he drew animals and monsters before graduating to steam trains, pets and caricatures. Along the way, he discovered a passion for nostalgia and began creating his own interpretations of the everyday items that shaped his childhood. He says: “Being self-taught, I have studied many artists – particularly the techniques of the old masters, which I have adapted to suit my own way of working. Nostalgia is a driving influence in all of my work.” Nigel’s latest collection is inspired by the American comic book artist Alex Ross, who is best-known for his work for Marvel and DC. Recreating childhood superheroes including Iron Man, Batman, Spiderman and The Incredible Hulk, Nigel combines his love of nostalgia with a burst of colour that truly brings his pieces to life. He now hopes his art will evoke a reaction in people of all different ages, adding: “My main aim is to bring a smile to people’s faces.”
